Protection Given to Us in Psalm 91

Updated: Sep 20, 2020

An Interpretive, Personalized and Contemporary Commentary of Psalm 91

I would like to share with you one of my favorite chapters in all of the Bible.

In an age of world-wide pandemics, governments running wild, with social distancing and many various views on what should or should not be done, it is a time when God’s promises in your heart will bring comfort and protection.

Psalm 91 seems to capture every protective need that we could have and is so appropriate in this time of world-wide viruses, pestilence, and epidemic diseases being spread throughout the earth. These are the things that strike fear into men’s hearts. The following is an interpretive commentary along with the promises made and additional definitions of the names of God referenced in scripture, and other statements.

It’s a great Psalm to read aloud, personalized, and taking into account that this is the everlasting word of God that is full of promises. “For in Him all the promises of God are “Yes.” Therefore also through Him is the “Amen” by us, to the glory of God”. 2 Cor. 1:20 TLV

Psalm 91:

He who resides in the shelter of (1) the Most High, (the Possessor of heaven and earth) will find for himself a home in the shadow of (2) the Almighty, (the All-Sufficient One).

“I will say of (3) The LORD, - Jehovah”, (the Covenant Keeping God), “You are my refuge and my fortress, (4) My All-Powerful God, in whom I trust.” For it is You who delivers me from snares laid out by the trapper to catch and imprison me. And it is You who delivers me from the deadly virus that plagues the earth.

You will cover me with Your feathers and, like little baby chicks under Your wings, I will seek refuge.

Your faithfulness to me is a shield that deflects every deadly arrow, and it is a defensive wall that hides and protects me from any fierce and destructive attack by my enemies.

I will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; or of the pestilence, the fatal epidemic disease that stealthily spreads about the land in the dark of night. And I will not be afraid of the enemy’s arrow that seeks to destroy me even in the middle of the day.

This is the way You protect me, that even though a thousand may fall beside me, and ten thousand as near as my right hand, it will not approach me to inflict death or disease upon me.

I will only look with my eyes and see the repayment of the wicked. For I have made (3)Jehovah, (the covenant-keeping God), my refuge; even (1) the Most High (the Possessor of heaven and earth) my residence, the place where I dwell and live securely.

NO evil will fall upon me and no plague, no rapidly spreading, contagious disease will come near me, wherever I happen to be dwelling, in a tent or in a beautifully constructed house, because He gives His angels charge concerning me to guard me in all my ways. They will bear me up in their mighty hands, so that I do not as much as strike my foot against a stone.

I will tread upon the lion and cobra: I’ll trample down both the young vigorous lion and the steely, ruthless serpent, that in all their cunningness and power, I will defeat them.

This is what my God promises me:

Because I have set my love upon Him, He will deliver me; and

He will set me securely on high places because I know Him by name.

I will call upon Him in His all-sufficient name and He will answer me.

He will be with me in trouble, and He will rescue me, and honor me.

In all of this, with long life, He promises to satisfy me, to fulfill my desires, expectations and needs, that I might see and experience His salvation, deliverance, healing, redemption, and protection.

Gen. 17:6. NASB. - “I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you”.
